Brooke ink-block printing her Chinese name, Heshan.
He-shan (river-mountain) is a Chinese approximation of the meaning for Brooke, and it is visually suggestive of the Chinese name for landscape: shan-shui (mountain-water). Of course, Brooke could have just as easily chosen the Chinese name Xiao-he (little-river), but she had first settled on Heshan with much enthusiasm.
Every student in class received a Chinese name with which each was pleased. Every name was comprised of two characters and was based on meaning or phonetic approximation. For example, Troy became Jun-li (army-power) and Hagan became Hai-gan (sea-venture/bold/brave). The students then carved their Chinese characters into ink-blocks before block-printing their Chinese names.
The ink-block print project was integrated with the China unit Adele Lawler was teaching in the elementary and middle school social studies classrooms.
